CTO Forum 2013

The Forum is the constitutionally mandated ‘flagship’ event of the CTO this year’s event concluded on the 9th October 2013, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, Nigeria. The 2013 Forum offered regional and international solutions for those in Commonwealth regions sharing knowledge, lessons learnt and key information about technological advances across the Commonwealth and beyond.

Commonwealth governments and ICT industry leaders met for three days in Abuja, Nigeria during the 11th Annual CTO Forum, in a collective effort to find ways to accelerate universal access to affordable broadband Internet connectivity for all. Over 200 participants from Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe, North America and the Caribbean converged in Abuja for the event. Also present at the event were ICT regulators from Commonwealth countries, as well as civil society organisations, whose role has been critical in recent years in promoting wider access to ICTs.

Innovation through broadband’ was the overall theme for this year’s event, speakers and exhibitors at the Forum provided critical updates and insight into infrastructure, security and application challenges facing the ICT sector.

Hosted by the Nigerian Communications Commission on behalf of the Nigerian Government, the CTO Forum brought together Ministers, Senior Officials, Regulators, Universal Service Fund Administrators, Operators and Vendors. The event provided the opportunity for both public and private sectors to discover how suitable partnerships can hasten ICT development for the benefit of all, including the marginalised across the world.

Issues discussed during the Forum included:
  • Managing broadband initiatives, formulating broadband policy and establishing the appropriate regulatory environments;
  • Future networks and their impact on international connectivity;
  • Moving from increased broadband access to improved usage;
  • The impact of mobile broadband on end-users;
  • Policymaking for Internet safety and security;
  • Broadband applications, innovations and partnerships;
  • Women, empowerment and ICTs;
  • Young people, ICTs and entrepreneurship.
