International Women’s Day and Commonwealth Day Event

Secretary General Lewis, marked International Women’s Day and Commonwealth Day by attending a celebratory event, organised by the Fijian Servicewomen UK. Joining a roll call of inspirational women both from the military, as well as, international civil organisations. The agenda featured insightful speeches celebrating the achievements of women throughout history, and followed the IWD theme “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world“.

The evening event was open to all servicewomen within the United Kingdom and Europe, to commemorate and celebrate the achievements of women across the Commonwealth. Notable speeches were given by the President of United Nations Human Rights Council, HE Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan; Secretary General Lewis; Cdre Ellie Ablett, Assistant Chief of Staff Personnel Capability, Royal Navy; and Mrs Viniana Vunivalu, Vice Chair, Fijian Servicewomen UK (FSUK).

The Fijian Servicewomen UK represent Fijian women serving within the UK armed services. Servicewomen within the United Kingdom come from various commonwealth countries and territories and since the first enlistment have continued to break barriers and glass ceilings.

The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation is committed to using information and communication technologies for promoting gender equality and the rights of women.
