Expanding Horizons: Satellite Technologies Driving Digital Transformation
On 26 February 2026, the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO), in partnership with Viasat, hosted a Satellite Communication Workshop in Kenya to explore how emerging satellite technologies can support digital transformation and expand connectivity.
Hosted by the Communications Authority of Kenya, the event marked the first in a series of regional workshops aimed at fostering dialogue between policymakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders.
The workshop opened with remarks from representatives of the Communications Authority of Kenya, the CTO, and Viasat, who highlighted the importance of collaboration, regulatory readiness, and forward-looking policies in unlocking the full potential of satellite technologies.
Participants explored how satellite innovations can accelerate broadband expansion, particularly in remote and underserved communities. Discussions covered emerging satellite technologies, direct-to-device connectivity, Mobile Satellite Services (MSS), developments in geostationary and non-geostationary satellite systems, and policy considerations shaping the evolving space sector.
Sessions also addressed market access opportunities, space sustainability, and debris management, concluding with key insights and practical recommendations for future action.
The workshop reflects the CTO and Viasat's shared commitment to strengthening collaboration between policymakers and industry to support inclusive and resilient digital development.
As the first in a wider regional series across Africa, Asia-Pacific, and the Caribbean, the initiative aims to help countries harness emerging technologies and build future-ready digital ecosystems.
